About Typography Calculator

/01 Converting between typographic units

Typography still carries units from centuries of printing. A point is 1/72 of an inch, a pica is 12 points, a cicero is the French equivalent at 12 Didot points, and agates survive in newspaper column advertising. Mixing them up by a factor of twelve is an easy and expensive mistake.

This calculator converts between points, picas, ciceros, agates, inches and millimetres at once, so a value entered in any field updates all the others.

/02 When you actually need this

Print specifications, book layout, and older type foundry documentation all quote sizes in points and picas, while press operators and paper suppliers work in millimetres. Anyone moving a design between a print spec and a screen layout ends up doing these conversions repeatedly.

Note that the desktop publishing point used here is exactly 1/72 inch — the PostScript definition every modern application uses — not the slightly different historical American point.

/03 Converting points to mm and inches

A typographic point is defined as 1/72 of an inch, which makes one point 0.3528 millimetres. So 12pt type is 4.23mm, 10pt is 3.53mm and 72pt is exactly one inch, or 25.4mm. A pica is 12 points, 4.233mm, and the Continental cicero, based on the older Didot point, is slightly larger at about 4.51mm.

There is a catch that surprises people measuring printed text with a ruler. The point size describes the height of the type's body, the invisible box each letter sits in, not the letters themselves. A capital letter in 12pt text is usually around two thirds of 4.23mm, roughly 3mm, and lowercase letters are smaller still. Two fonts at the same point size can look noticeably different in size for exactly that reason.

/04 Points on screen: pixels and rem

Screens use a different base. CSS defines 96 pixels per inch, so one point is 1.333 pixels, 12pt equals 16px and 9pt equals 12px. That is why 12pt in a word processor and 16px on a web page look like the same size.

For web type, convert onward to rem. With the browser default root size of 16px, 12pt becomes 16px and then 1rem. This calculator shows points, picas, ciceros, agates, inches, millimetres, centimetres, pixels and rem together from any one value, with the base font size adjustable for the relative units.

FAQ

Questions about Typography Calculator.

How many points are in a pica?
Twelve. Six picas make an inch, so 72 points make an inch. Picas are usually written like 3p6, meaning three picas and six points.
What is a cicero?
The continental European counterpart to the pica, equal to 12 Didot points, or about 4.51mm — slightly larger than a pica. It appears in older French, German and Italian typesetting specs.
Which point definition does this use?
The PostScript or desktop publishing point, exactly 1/72 of an inch. Historical American and Didot points differ marginally, which matters when reproducing old metal type specifications but not for modern work.
How many mm is 12 point font?
12 points is 4.23mm, but that measures the body of the type, not the visible letters. Capital letters in 12pt text are typically around 3mm tall, and the exact figure varies from font to font.
How do I convert points to inches?
Divide by 72, since there are 72 points in an inch. 36pt is half an inch, 18pt a quarter inch and 144pt two inches.
Is a point the same as a pixel?
No. In CSS one point is 1.333 pixels, because the web assumes 96 pixels per inch while print uses 72 points per inch. 12pt equals 16px, which is the default browser font size.
